Anne J. Lester Papers Regarding the School of Architecture

This collection houses photographs, plans and entries for the Art and Architecture Building, photographs of Architecture students and faculty, memos, publications, architecture books and journals, and student work that Professor Anne Lester accumulated during her time at the University of Tennessee's School of Architecture. The bulk of the material dates from between 1975 and 1996.

Series I: Student Projects, 1969-1995 houses student work on on the history of Knoxville and Tennessee buildings. Series II: Publications, 1962-1996 contains architectural journals, books, and newsletters.

Series III: School of Architecture Internal Documents, 1930-1997 (bulk 1966-1997) consists of faculty memos, committee meeting minutes, class materials, curriculum changes, class syllabi, and special projects documenting the Department of Architecture's internal workings. Of particular interest are the research and preservation proposals for the 1600 block of Melrose Avenue (which is now a parking lot and the International House) that the School of Architecture vacated when it moved to the new Art and Architecture Building and issues of the Daily Beacon showing the administration's decision to paint the doors of all University buildings orange.

Series IV: Audio-Visual Materials, 1977-1982, 1995 holds slides and photographs used in Lester's courses, entries for the proposed Art and Architecture building, information documenting the building's construction, and photographs of architecture students and faculty. It also houses videocassette tapes regarding the building of the Art and Architecture Building, interviews, and urban renewal.

Abstract

This collection houses photographs, plans and entries for the Art and Architecture Building, photographs of Architecture students and faculty, memos, publications, architecture books and journals, and student work that Professor Anne Lester accumulated during her time at the University of Tennessee's School of Architecture. The bulk of the material dates from between 1975 and 1996.

Biographical/Historical Note

Anne J. Lester was a historian and professor for the School of Architecture at the University of Tennessee. She taught architectural history and advanced architectural studies as well as serving on the Undergraduate Council and the Long Range Planning Committee.
