Rufus and John L. Roberson Letters

This collection contains three letters from John and Rufus Roberson. In an 1844 letter, John Roberson writes from East Tennessee University (now the University of Tennessee) requesting money. In another letter, Rufus details the death of brother John Roberson during the Mexican-American War. An 1846 letter, written from an unidentified camp, from John Roberson to an unidentitfied friend as well as an 1847 muster roll of the Fourth Tennessee Cavalry (Caswell's company) can also be found in the collection.

Abstract

This collection contains letters from Rufus Roberson and John L. Roberson. One letter concerns East Tennessee University (now University of Tennessee) and the others are written from the Mexican-American War. The collection also contains the 1847 muster roll for the Fourth Tennessee Cavalry (Casewell's company).

Biographical/Historical Note

John Lafayette Roberson was born on November 17th, 1824 to James (1784-1852) and Margaret (Worthington) (1786-1827) in Bledsoe County, Tennessee. John was one of approximately eight children, including his brother Rufus Brown Roberson (1818-1886). John Roberson served in the Mexican-American War and was killed in action on August 1st, 1847 in Cerro Gordo, Zaragoza Municipality, San Luis Potosi, Mexico. His body was lost or destroyed, but there is a grave marker for him in the Roberson Cemetery in Bledsoe County, Tennessee.

Rufus Brown Roberson was born on February 1st, 1818 to James and Margaret (Worthington) Roberson in Bledsoe County, Tennessee. He married Elizabeth Sophia Buckingham (1826-1880) in 1861. The couple had at least one child, Eugenia B. Roberson (1862-1878). Rufus Roberson died on March 7th, 1886 and is buried in Roberson Cemetery in Bledsoe, Tennessee.
