Biographical/Historical Note
The Graduate Hooding Ceremony is a commencement ceremony for graduate students only and includes the ceremonial hooding of the doctoral students. Torch Night, in which incoming freshman pledge allegiance to the University of Tennessee, was an annual ceremony from 1926 until the mid-1960s and has recently experienced a revival. It has an accompanying ceremony known as Aloha Oe, where outgoing seniors are reminded of their Torch Night pledges and pass the torch to the incoming freshmen class.
