Abstract
This collection houses a pair of scissors that belonged to Miss Mary Baker, University of Tennessee Librarian from 1923 to 1943.
Biographical/Historical Note
Mary Ellen Baker was born to Nathan Martin and Sarah Elizabeth (Price) Baker in Illinois in August of 1874. She attended Lincoln University in Lincoln, Illinois and the University of Illinois Library School before graduating from the New York State Library School in Albany. She worked at Bryn Mawr College, headed the cataloging department at the University of Missouri, taught library school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and headed the cataloging department at the Pittsburgh Public Library (1920-1923) before coming to the University of Tennessee as the University Librarian. During her tenure, she helped plan Hoskins Library to replace Carnegie Library and organized the move to the new facility. Baker retired in 1943.
