This collection houses a scrapbook compiled by Arthur Seymour documenting his time at the University of Tennessee. It contains numerous articles from the student newspaper (the Orange and White) showing Seymour’s election as student body president, the annual tradition Aloha Oe, Kappa Sigma fraternity, and the University’s football team. It also includes newspaper marriage announcements, invitations to Kappa Sigma dances, articles on graduation, a birthday card from Seymour’s mother, a postcard from Indiana, a calendar of University events for the school year 1939-1940, various photographs of Seymour, and a special from Time magazine outlining the background for war against Germany.

Abstract

This collection houses a scrapbook compiled by Arthur Seymour documenting his time at the University of Tennessee. It contains a wide variety of materials, including newspaper articles relating to his fraternity, invitations to fraternity dances, notices of marriages, and other articles about the University.

Biographical/Historical Note

Arthur Gloster Seymour, son of Charles Milne and Flora Nell (Gloster) Seymour, was a native of Knoxville, Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1939 and again with a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1941. He was elected student president of the University and Torchbearer in addition to being a member of Kappa Sigma and Phi Delta Phi fraternities. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the US Army in 1938 and served until he was discharged in 1946, after which he pursued a law career at the law firm of Frantz, McConnell and Seymour. Arthur Seymour died in October of 2002 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
