This collection houses materials documenting the administration of University of Tennessee President J. Wade Gilley, including information on Gilley’s background and newspaper articles about his administration. Other topics include Gilley’s resume, the search process by which he was selected, and Gilley’s response to a budget crisis that threatened to shut down the University and resulted in administrative cutbacks and the elimination of the Chancellor’s position at the Knoxville campus. The collection also houses materials showing the scandal that erupted when English professor Linda Bensel-Meyers accused the University of academic fraud in the education of NCAA athletes and claimed that the athletic department was running university policy.

Abstract

This collection houses materials documenting the administration of University of Tennessee President J. Wade Gilley, including information on Gilley’s background and newspaper articles about his administration.

Biographical/Historical Note

James Wade Gilley was born in Fries, Virginia on August 15, 1938. He earned his BS (1961), MS (1964), and PhD (1966) in Civil Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic and State University and undertook postgraduate work at the University of Florida and at Harvard University. He served as the Dean of the School of Science and Technology (1966-1967) and as President (1975-1978) at Bluefield (West Virginia) State College, as Secretary of Education for the State of Virginia (1987-1982), as Vice President and Professor at George Mason University (1982-1991), and as President and Professor at Marshall University (1991-1999) before becoming President of the University of Tennessee. Here, he presided over a budget crisis and administrative restructuring before resigning in 2001 amidst allegations of an inappropriate affair with a subordinate.
