This collection houses a variety of materials commemorating the life of Dr. Alvin H. Nielsen, including biographical information, memorial service programs and articles, and items documenting the Alvin Nielsen Physics Building.
Biographical/Historical Note
Alvin Herborg Nielsen was born to Knud and Maren (Nielsen) Nielsen in Menominee, Michigan on May 30, 1910. He was educated at the University of Michigan, where he earned his BA (1931), MS (1932) and PhD (1934). He began his professional career as a Research Fellow at Ohio State University, but left this post in 1935 to join the faculty of the University of Tennessee. Here, he served as a Professor of Physics (1935-1980), as the Head of the Department of Physics (1956-1959), and as the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts (1963-1977). He was also honored as a Mace Bearer and as a Phi Kappa Phi Distinguished Faculty lecturer (1962-1963). In addition to his work with the University of Tennessee, Nielsen served as a Research Associate for the Office of Scientific Research and Development at the Ohio State University Research Foundation (1944-1946) and as a Consultant for the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant Laboratories and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (1947-1980). Nielsen died on November 3, 1994 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
