This collection contains the minutes of the University Senate and Faculty Senate Meetings dating from 1947 to 1998. The materials were originally numbered sequentially and kept in binders. A second series houses research files from the Senate Joint Committee investigating religion on campus. The collection is arranged in chronological order. Biographical/Historical Note
The Board of Trustees established the Faculty Senate in August of 1949 to facilitate the educational functions of the faculties of the various Colleges of the University and advise with the administration of the University in a more effective manner. On June 15, 1972, the Board of Trustees changed the name of the group to the Faculty Senate of the University of Tennessee. The Faculty Senate formulates policies and regulations regarding the educational objectives of the University. In addition, the Senate may review the actions of the Special Faculties of the University concerning the specific admissions and graduation requirements for the programs of the various academic units.
