Biographical/Historical Note

Washington County (North Carolina) was created in 1777 and included most of what is now Tennessee. It had two courts: the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions (which handled judicial, legislative, and administrative matters) and the Superior Court (which handled matters of equity). Between 1784 and 1788, jurisdiction over Washington County was contested between North Carolina and the State of Franklin. After the State of Franklin's fall, the territory reverted to North Carolina, which ceded it to the federal government in 1789. The area subsequently became part of the Territory South of the River Ohio. Tennessee was formed from this territory in 1796.

Acquisition Note

James D. Hoskins donated these documents to Special Collections on January 21, 1935.
