Abstract
Dr. Henry Hayes, an army physician, wrote this letter to a friend in Vermont. In the letter, Dr. Hayes discusses the aftermath of the Fort Pillow Massacre.
Biographical/Historical Note
Dr. Henry Hayes was born on June 12, 1804, in Perth, Scotland. He married Anna Gibb, also from Scotland, and the couple had seven children. His daughter Katherine Isabel Hayes Chapin Barrows also became a doctor, an ophthalmologist. Hayes was a surgeon in the Union Army and died in Memphis, Tennessee on September 4, 1864.
