Abstract

This collection contains a pardon dated September 20, 1865 for Asher Ayres from President Andrew Johnson for any involvement in the Southern war effort and a print of President Johnson.

Biographical/Historical Note

Asher Ayres was born June 2, 1814 in Woodbridge, New Jersey to Asher and Frances Ayres. At some point he moved to Georgia where he was a merchant who aided in the Southern war effort during the Civil War. Ayres was later recommended for a pardon by Governor James Johnson. Ayres was granted the pardon by President Andrew Johnson in 1865 having fallen under President Johnson’s 13th Exception to the Amnesty Proclamation, owning more than $20,000 worth of property. Ayres was married to Mary Ann Cutter and together they had seven children. He died on October 22, 1882 in Macon, Bibb County, GA.
