It was written by James Aiken, clerk of the Superior Court of Law of Washington District, Tennessee, to the current sheriff of the time of Greene County, Tennessee.

Biographical/Historical Note
The Territory of the United States South of the Ohio River, otherwise known as the Southwest Territory, existed from 1790 to 1796 when it was incorporated into the United States as the state of Tennessee. The territory consisted of two administrative districts, the Washington District in the northwest and the Mero District in and around Nashville. The judgment in this collection was issued in the Washington District against the former Sherriff of Greene County, James Richardson, Esquire.
James Aiken was the clerk of the Superior Court of Law for Washington District of the State of Tennessee.
James Richardson was married to Anna Wilson on September 2, 1782. In May of 1787, he was elected as Sheriff of Greene County in Tennessee. He was Sheriff until 1792. After him came William L. Lovely who was Sheriff from 1792-1794, and George Conway, who was Sheriff from 1794-1800. Conway would have been the man that the letter from Aiken would have gone to.
No other biographical information could be found regarding James Aiken and James Richardson, Esquire.
