Abstract

This collection consists of a typescript draft of Gordon Browning's memoirs.

Biographical/Historical Note

Gordon Browning (D) was born in Carroll County, Tennessee in 1895.He graduated from the Cumberland School of Law in 1915. He was a member of the Tennessee National Guard and travelled to Europe during World War I. Browning practiced law after the war.Browning lost an election for United States Congress in 1920. He won the the election of 1922 and served as a member of the United States Congress for six terms. In 1934 he lost a campaign for a two-year term in the United States Senate.He ran for Governor of Tennessee in 1936. He won the election and became governor in 1937. He lost the gubernatorial election of 1938 to Prentice Cooper. Browning was successful in the gubernatorial election of 1948 after defeating Republican candidate Roy Acuff. He was re-elected governor in 1950 after defeating Clifford Allen. Browning lost the campaign for relection in 1952 to Frank G. Clement. Gordon Browning died in 1976.
