This collection contains five series: Politcal Papers, Ephemera, Posthumous Materials, Scrapbooks and Journals, and flat-file oversized materials.

Series I. Political Papers: This series includes memoranda, official documents, Senate resolutions, correspondence, and other documents directly relating to Graves’ work in state and national politics. The original order of these papers was chronological, and they have been left that way. Series II. Ephemera: This series includes photographs, loose press clippings about Graves and his wife, and papers documenting various academic and social honors. The photographs are in one folder and everything else is in another. Series III. Posthumous materials: This series includes condolence letters and correspondence of Mrs. Graves, and documents and press clippings relating to various honors bestowed upon the Senator after his death (a law scholarship in his name at UT, etc.) . Series IV. Scrapbooks and Journals: This series includes a journal and several scrapbooks. Series V Oversize flat-file material: This series contains oversized flat-file materials, including Graves' license to practice law and a schematic for his memorial.

Abstract

This collection contains documents from Andrew Jackson Graves' life and career as a Tennessee State Senator. The bulk of the material comes from the years 1933 to 1940, and relates to various projects Graves was involved in at the local, state, and national levels. The collection also contains a sizable number of posthumous documents pertaining to awards and honors he received after his death.

Biographical/Historical Note

Andrew Jackson Graves (1880-1951) was a native of Blount County, TN and received his law degree from the University of Tennessee in 1911. He practiced law in Knoxville until he was elected to the Tennessee State Senate where he served Knox County for 14 years. While a State Senator, he served both as the coal administrator and as the state representative on the Interstate Commission on Crime, and co-authored an appropriation bill toward the establishment of Smoky Mountains National Park.
