Mayor Letters 1940-1944: Correspondence includes letters from Cordell Hull, J. Edgar Hoover, Helen Keller, and Franklin Roosevelt (one of the letters is on the surrender of Italy).
Mayor Letters 1945-1949: Letters, telegrams, and cards. Includes correspondence from Supreme Court Justices, Estes Kefauver, Lyndon B. Johnson and Harry Truman.
Letters 1950-1960: Letters, cards, pictures, and telegrams. Letters include correspondence from Carl Jung, Joan Crawford, Lyndon B. Johnson, Henry Ford II, Buckingham Palace and Harry Truman.

Abstract
Seven bound volumes containing the correspondence of Walter Chandler, a former Tennessee state representative (1917), State Senator (1921-1923), U.S. Representative (1935-1940) and mayor of Memphis (1943-1946 and 1955). The correspondence includes letters from U.S. presidents, Supreme Court justices, and other well-known persons.
Biographical/Historical Note
Walter Clift Chandler, a Democrat, was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives in 1917 and served as a Tennessee state senator from 1921-1923. He was delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1940 and 1944, was elected to Congress and served from 1935-1940. He was also mayor of Memphis from 1943-1946 and in 1955 for an unexpired term. He may be best known for the Chandler Act of 1939, a precursor to Chapter 11 and Chapter 13 of current bankruptcy law.
