Abstract

The E. Riley Anderson Collection contains the records of Judge E. Riley Anderson, a Tennessee-native lawyer and jurist who served as Chief Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court. The records focus on judicial decisions in the State of Tennessee. The time periods covered extend from the 1980s to the first decade of the 21 century. Biographical/Historical Note

E. Riley Anderson (August 10, 1932 – July 4, 2018) was a Tennessee-native lawyer and jurist. After graduating from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1957, Judge Anderson spent three decades in private practice in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where he also served in numerous civic positions such as on the charter commission. In 1987, Governor McWherter appointed Anderson to the State Court of Appeals. In 1990, he was elected to the Tennessee Supreme Court, serving through 2006 including five years as Chief Justice. Judge Anderson also founded the Supreme Court Advancing Legal Education for Students (SCALES) program which introduced high school students to the judiciary system through mock judicial sessions with real judges. His work with Supreme SCALES earned Judge Anderson the Sandra Day O'Connor Award for Advancement in Civic Education.
