Biographical/Historical Note

Sacred harp singing, also known as “shape-note singing,” is a long-standing American music tradition. The tradition, which remains a part of American culture today, was formed as a way to teach music in an accessible way and to bring communities together. Shape note singing includes both spiritual and folk songs.
